Overview

Ayurveda is a philosophy for living a balanced life. The word Ayurveda comes from two words,  Ayu meaning life and Veda meaning knowledge. The classical Ayurvedic texts, were recorded around 4000 BC and have been used to help people for over 6000 years.
By focusing on internal balance this time proven philosophy is able to  help people in any era, country, or creed.

Ayurveda is a holistic healing system that does not treat the symptoms of an illness, instead focuses on addressing the root cause that is creating the ailment.

Symptoms are manifestations of a deeper imbalance within the body or the mind.  Much like how pain tells us something is wrong, if all we do is take a pain reliever the pain will return.

Ayurveda teaches us to look to the underlying cause of the symptoms and work to cure that cause.   Once you resolve the root cause of the imbalance the symptoms will disappear naturally.

Ayurveda is believed to be the most ancient of all life sciences. It is said that over 5000 years ago mankind suffered from a great many ailments and diseases. To help their people a group of sages  journeyed to Lord Indra, the King of Gods, and petitioned for a solution. In response to the plight of mankind, Lord Indra bestowed upon Lord Dhanvantari, the Hindu God of Medicine,  the knowledge of Ayurveda. Lord Dhanvantari in turn taught the knowledge of Ayurveda to the sages so that through natural means they might heal mankind.  Using Ayurveda, the sages were able to treat the underlying imbalances that had caused the illnesses and heal mankind.

The Basics of Ayurvedic Philosophy

All matter consists of five basic elements:
Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Ether (or space).

Human beings, animals and plants are all microcosms within nature and hence each of the five elements are within each individual. It is a balance of these five elements that are  responsible for all life force on the planet.

Earth represents solidity, nourishment, and steadiness.
This is our bones and muscles.
Water represents moisture, fluidity and nourishment.
This is our blood and plasma
Fire represents transformation, metabolism and heat.
This is our hormones, enzymes, digestive juices, and other natural processes.
Air is transportation, and motion.
These are our nerve impulse, and all movement of body.
Space is emptiness.
This is found in our hollow organs like our gastrointestinal tract, and circulatory system.

By identifying where the underlying imbalance lies, and with which element, Ayurveda can help you treat the underlying issues that are affecting your life.
